Pryluckis Noachas (LCVA R-856-2-11-23-1)

Associate Professor Noachas Pryluckis (1882-1941) received legal education, but became one of the most recognised specialists in the Yiddish language in the interwar Europe and was acknowledged as a pioneer in the field of Yiddish dialectology. Coming from the intellectual milieu of Warsaw, he fled to Vilnius as a refugee of the Second World War. He became the head of the Department of Yiddish Philology at Vilnius University, and from January 1941 he was the last director of the famous YIVO institute (Jidishe Visnshaftlecher Institut) in Vilnius, which was relocated to New York City during the war. During the Nazi occupation, on 22 June 1941, he was fired from Vilnius University following the order of the Governor of Education Affairs of Vilnius and the Vilnius Region. He was killed in Vilnius.
