Student Algirdas Endriukaitis

Student Algirdas Endriukaitis (b. 1936) is a signatory of the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania. Algirdas Endriukaitis was born in a family of civil servants in Kaunas, finished a secondary school in Pilviškiai in 1954, and in the same year became a student at the Faculty of Law of Vilnius University. He studied here from 1954 to 1957 until he was arrested and imprisoned for anti-Soviet activities. In the third year of his studies, Algirdas Endriukaitis was expelled from the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League, usually known as Komsomol, was denied his student grants, and in February 1957 was arrested and shortly sentenced to imprisonment in a labour camp. The threat he was posing and the damage he was inflicting were discerned in his being a member of an anti-Soviet organization (from 1952), in taking part in the commemoration of All Souls Day in the Rasos Cemetery on 2 November 1956, and in encouraging people to rally and march in the middle of the street as a sign of protest. He was imprisoned in the gulags of Mordovia until 1963. Endriukaitis graduated in economics from the Lithuanian Agricultural Academy in 1970. In independent Lithuania, he was granted the legal status of a Freedom fighter.
