Jutan Izraelis

Izraelis Jutan was born on 8 July 1919 in Vilnius, into the family of Zacharijas Jutan (disabled during the First World War) and Basia Goldman, who moved to Vilnius from Ukmergė. He went to a primary school in Vilnius and from 1929 attended the Adam Mickiewicz Gymnasium, with instruction in Polish, and finished it in 1937 receiving a graduation certificate for finishing an eight-form gymnasium with an emphasis on the humanities. His grades were rather mediocre with the exception of English and religious studies. After graduation from the gymnasium, he became a student in the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the Vilnius Stephen Bathory University. In 1940, he decided to expand his knowledge of the English language and literature, and on 29 February 1940 he submitted a request to become of an auditor in the English studies group of the Philological Department of the Faculty of Humanities at Vilnius University. A month later, Jutan submitted another request to the rector, asking that his status of auditor be changed to that of a regular student. So it is highly likely that he abandoned his chemistry studies in 1940. On 19 September 1941, Jutan was expelled from the Department of Philology of the Faculty of Humanities of Vilnius University on the basis of the Order of 17 September 1941 of the Higher Education Department of the Board of Education, which was subordinate to the Nazis. Most probably he was killed in Vilnius. Without any additional data, an individual with such a name and surname was included in the list of the inmates of the Vilnius Ghetto.
